Entering the G-side (government side) to work in demand analysis or product roles is one of the options for many graduates. However, is G-end work right for you? What are its advantages and challenges? This article will explore the characteristics, suitable groups and career development possibilities of G-end work from the perspective of a practitioner who has been engaged in G-end demand analysis in state-owned enterprises for two years.
After graduation, I have been doing G-end demand analysis in state-owned enterprises, and now I have been doing it for two years, because I have been considering transformation recently, so I wrote this article for newcomers’ reference.
1. Do you want to do a demand/product post?
Before doing it, think about what you are doing this job for:
When I first graduated from the interview, one sentence that was often asked was: Why do you want to do a product position? Generally, this position has been working for many years in development/testing transformation, and it will be difficult to do it without experience.
1. If you don’t want to do testing because you can’t do development, and you feel that O&M is a bit like that, but you want to stay in the Internet industry (not derogatory, just an example)
Then think about whether you can write a document of 10,000 words, or look at some documents written by others with tens of thousands of words and sort out a set of logic, if not, then think about it;
Realistic scenario: When you are a newcomer, some companies will ask you to look at a bunch of documents or materials first, and then ask you to draw a picture to see how you understand.
2. If the above can be done, or if the requirements/products have been thought out
Then think about whether you can think (or even make decisions) without relying on others, and if you can’t, then think about it;
Realistic scenario: Party A wants to make something, and the developer says it can’t be done, but based on your reasonable (must be reasonable) analysis, if you can do it and have to do it, you can persuade them to do it and formulate a more reasonable plan.
3. If you can still do the above
Think about whether you can accept that you may be facing content outside of your work responsibilities when you go to work (for example, you are learning to drive a car, and now you need to learn a little how to build a car), if not, then think about it.

Good product managers are very scarce, and product managers who understand users, business, and data are still in demand when they go out of the Internet. On the contrary, if you only do simple communication, inefficient execution, and shallow thinking, I am afraid that you will not be able to go through the torrent of the next 3-5 years.

Realistic scenario: You are doing a business-oriented thing, you can’t just be responsible for the part you are responsible for, you also need to spend time figuring out how the pre-order and subsequent business works, even if you understand this thing once and may not be involved in the future.
4. If you can, think about whether you can resist scolding and whether you can bear it
Realistic scene: The last colleague made something, this job was handed over to you, you just received it, Party A asked you to transform this cup, you found that the person in front of you made this thing into a lump, you can’t do it, but Party A still scolds you, you can’t refute it, you can only endure on this lump to continue to do it, and then from time to time scold you for things that have nothing to do with you.
If you can, then you are capable at the very beginning, at least you will not be particularly resistant after starting work, and there are other criteria for judging how far you can do it.
After all, if you have just graduated, the first job is very important, and in this market where you need experience to do everything, you will not be ruined or delayed by trial and error in the past few years.
2. Think about what the G-end will face
The reason why I want to make products is that I prefer to do things that give me a sense of accomplishment in design and creativity, and this position is more developed and more interesting than other positions.
At first, I was struggling with pre-sales, project manager and this, considering that only the product in these three positions is more in line with my requirements, so I chose the demand (there is a difference between the product and the demand, but when you first get started, just find it, at least the threshold is a little better than that of cross-post transfer when these two transform each other)
Because the longest thing I’ve done is the G-end, so I’ll only talk about the G-end here, and I’ll talk about the rest after I transform
1. The “unacceptable” of the G-end
(1) The common problem of the G end – “almost” no room for decision-making
ps: It’s just based on what I’ve been in contact with, it doesn’t represent the industry, maybe it’s a bit exaggerated, but it’s really true.
The brief description of the requirements on the G-side is:
The upper level issues a document or even a “sentence” from the leader – Party A prepares a business process and explanation according to the document – Party B analyzes what to do word by word according to the written business process – asks Party A if this is okay – development
For example, Party A asks you to calculate what is the sum from 1 to 100. Normally, the Gaussian summation formula can be solved in a few steps. But for the G-side, I asked you to add from 1 to 100, I said to add to 100, not to let you count to 100, then you must add me from 1+2+3 to 100, and you can’t change it.
At this time, you are wondering, then I can calculate it directly, why do I have to calculate it like this? If there is no reason, you have to do so.
In short, it doesn’t matter whether it is reasonable or not, what I want is the most important, even if what you make is only used by one person, or no one uses it at all, or he can’t even be called a thing, then you have to do it.
That’s why I mentioned “can you bear it”, if you can’t bear it, you have to do it, you have no choice.
There are more situations, such as interface design, the novel will always say “hit yellow button”, you think that although he is weird, he can also make people have the urge to think about something, but the leader wants to make a shit green, then you can do it, you have to do it if you are awkward.
(2) Lengthy process – you have to be forced to rush to do things
For state-owned enterprises, there is no way to escape the process at all, just like the process I mentioned in the first paragraph, it is just the most basic process framework, which is actually much more complex than this.
I have encountered a function before, which will be launched at the end of the month and the beginning of the next month. The demand analysis was completed in a hurry, and the review was urged every day, and the result was in the review stage:
The first meeting: Party A does not agree with this technical plan and proposes a new technical plan;
Second meeting: I think the first plan is better;
Third meeting: the first and second programme combinations;
Finally: use the first version of the scheme.
After starting to do it, start the process:
First, go through the process of confirming the requirements, and a bunch of people approve it. Simultaneous table building requires the approval of more than 10 people before it can be built, and it cannot be done without creating a table. In the end, everyone is stuck in this process and can’t move, but the work is very anxious, so they can only continue to rush after the process is approved.
(3) Inexplicable taking the blame – even if it has nothing to do with you, it has something to do with you
As I said above, this will happen whether it is the process or your work to take over someone else’s work. Because there is no way to blame Party A internally, I can only blame you, everyone who understands this, I won’t be long-winded
2. The “place to train newcomers” on the G-end
(1) The advantage of “almost” no decision-making space – don’t worry about decision-making mistakes
As a newcomer, it is very difficult to make decisions, because if you do not have the ability and experience to deal with emergencies due to the follow-up impact caused by decision-making mistakes, on this basis, you don’t need to worry too much about what you are doing wrong, because the business scenario has been set, you only need to complete it step by step.
For example, if Party A asks you to calculate what is the sum from 1 to 100, you don’t know the Gaussian summation formula, you can do it in the simplest way, then you will definitely not make a mistake.
Abbreviation: As long as you do what I want, you will not have a problem
(2) The benefits of lengthy processes – don’t worry about the outcome
Because the process is too long, you can withdraw if you find a problem at any node, and there will be a special person to check whether there is a problem with your content, so you just need to do it step by step, as long as you throw it to other nodes on time, then you will have no problem.
(3) The benefits of having a relationship with you even if it has nothing to do with you – you will be “forced” to study
A business requirement is very huge, the biggest business I have been exposed to is a few million words of requirements documents, this kind of document you can’t read to death, you can only say that you are reading it when you encounter problems. Because of this, you find that the person in front of you made this thing into a lump, and Party A asked you to change it, so you have to study how this lump was made, then you have successfully learned a lot of things in a passive situation

Generally speaking, when you start to struggle with whether to enter the demand/product position, first think about why you want to do it, think about what you want, and whether this direction can meet your expectations, even if it meets the expectations you want to lie flat, that is also an expectation.
For the G-side:
If you are a newcomer who wants to work steadily and doesn’t have too many ideas, you will find a G-end to work, and under normal circumstances, there will be no layoffs, that is, it is purely consuming, because of his nature, so he will be very stable, and the older he gets, the more popular he will be;
If you want to make something, or have some good ideas or want to be a little more motivated, then I personally suggest that you think carefully, at least for myself, the G-end cannot meet what I want, so I choose to continue to explore;
If you want to try it first, then you can also try it, after all, compared with the B-end and the C-end, the “relatively” burden on the G-end will be a little smaller.
